Free Sugar/Vtiger/VTE Comparison - General and Data Management tools

The following comparison work is based on
  • SUGAR 6.5 COMMUNITY
  • VTIGER FREE 6.3
  • VTECRM COMMUNITY 15.05
All three the versions are free and downloadable from their official sites.

Comparing General tools VTECRM VTIGER SUGAR
Number of operational modules 35 30 19
Modules menu (list and areas) yes yes yes
Tools and shortcuts menu yes no no
Menu customization yes yes yes
Notifications settings per user yes no no
General user preferences yes yes yes
Graphic interface superior v.good lower

Graphic interface and navigation logic: VTE and Vtiger are very similar so are easy to compare, while Sugar is quite different (and much less endearing, I have to say it immediately).
Modules included as default (modules I can access, not just tools): Vtiger 30, VTE 35, Sugar 19.
Menus: in Vtiger and Sugar there is only the module menu, in VTE there is also a tools menu, which I think is very useful to access the personal tools from everywhere in the CRM. In all three the systems I can customize (more or less) the main menu. Vtiger is probably the best because it has more shortcuts to settings.
Customization of the graphic theme: better in Vtiger (I can choose from 9 colors), VTE has pre-defined themes, Sugar is non-customizable.
User preferences: the main options are similar, but VTE is absolutely the best. The user can choose for which modules, and which kind of record changes, the notifications are enabled or disabled. As default the notifications are internal (a panel from the tool menu) so they are not invasive and I can mark them as read/unread (like emails). It seems to use Facebook :)

Many of the basic CRM functions are available on all three the software: data assignation (propriety) to a user or a group of users, mass editing on selected records, control of duplicates with merge function, import and export of data via csv, simple and advanced research within a module or between modules, simple filters to extract lists of records, quick creation of related records, the change-log of the record, attaching documents to a record (for example, attach a pdf to the customer's sheet).
There are also considerable differences in the data management between VTE, Vtiger and Sugar.
Related contents menu (data in the other modules that are linked with the one you are on): Vtiger has a static menu, VTE has a dynamic menu, in Sugar I can only scroll a static list (no menu). VTE's shows a) the number of related records (for example I read Quotes [3] if there are three quotes related to the customer I am on), and b) the descending order of modules according to their content. This means less clicks to find and access contents and easier navigation.
VTE's advanced filters: based on date ranges or reports, provide more options to extract lists of records.
VTE's personal notification of changes: within each record or filter I can enable notifications that I receive every time a change happens (does not matter the assignation). This is one of the greatest things a CRM should have: like, alert me when a new lead appears in the list).
Clicks needed to view, open, add contents: I noticed that are less in VTE, more in Vtiger and Sugar (but Sugar has much less content than the competitors).
